There are some very interesting facts about the common EGG & chicken! We will gather up some interesting facts for you and believe me you will be amazed with some of them!! It is said that you can store a fresh egg, tip down in your pantry for up to three weeks and it will stay fresh!! I wouldn't advise this, seems we all have a fridge that has that neat little egg holder!!!!!
In general, about 4 pounds of feed are required to produce a dozen eggs. A white-egg layer eats about 1/4 pound of feed per day. Brown-egg layers are slightly larger and require more food.
Eggs in the grocery store can range any where from weeks old all the way up to months old at the time of purchase!!! YUCK Thank goodness our eggs are never any more than one to two days old! I read that either 20/20 or Date Line aired an episode that showed cartons of eggs that were out of date being picked up, rewashed and repackaged with new dates. According to the expose, some of the eggs in cartons in stores can be as old as six months. It showed the whole process being done, they were opening cartons, dumping them back into washing bins and repackaging them. The egg companies that were interviewed claimed the process "refreshed" the eggs and thus they could repackage them with new dates. We can all be grateful for our farm-fresh, natural eggs.
An older egg definitely makes a better hard-boiled egg - the shell releases easier thus making it easier to peel. I don't think we need to wait months for this to happen, I would say a few days maybe a week would suffice! Although eggs can really last quite some time, I think a fresh egg cooks and tastes the BEST!
Following completion of the 2007 Mother Earth News egg testing project, testing eggs from four flocks raised on pasture — the results revealed that compared to supermarket eggs from hens raised in cages, our free-range eggs contained only about half as much cholesterol, were up to twice as rich in vitamin E, and were two to six times richer in beta carotene (a form of vitamin A). For essential omega-3 fatty acids (vital for optimal heart and brain function), the free-range eggs averaged four times more than factory eggs. See full details of the test results at www.MotherEarthNews.com/eggs.
Farm fresh eggs contain:
When placed in a bowl of water, a good fresh egg will sink and a bad rotten egg will float !! Why? The older an egg the more air there is inside the shell, thus creating a lighter egg!
